The initiative seeks to improve public understanding of renewable energy by supporting journalists to produce in-depth reports on Nigeria's transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Solar Power Nigeria, in partnership with the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) and the Secure Energy Project, has launched a media grant programme to strengthen reporting on renewable energy and Nigeria's transition to cleaner energy sources.
The inaugural Solar Power Nigeria Media Story Grant was unveiled in Abuja on Friday, with 16 journalists selected to receive funding to produce in-depth reports on solar energy and related energy transition issues.
The beneficiaries, drawn from print, broadcast and online media organisations, emerged through a competitive selection process and will receive grants worth several millions of naira to support investigative and impactful storytelling.
Speaking at the launch, Joseph Ibrahim of Solar Power Nigeria said the initiative was designed to bridge gaps in renewable energy reporting and improve public understanding of energy access and transition issues.
He noted that while interest in renewable energy continues to grow, coverage of the sector often lacks the resources needed to explain complex policies, technologies and market developments in a way that resonates with ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, the grant reflects the organisation's commitment to supporting journalists with the tools and resources required to deliver accurate, evidence-based and solution-oriented energy stories.
The selected journalists are expected to publish or broadcast their reports within four weeks, focusing on the opportunities, challenges and impact of solar energy adoption across the country.
Organisers said the programme aims to promote informed public discourse on renewable energy, increase awareness of clean energy solutions and contribute to national conversations on sustainable development.
They expressed confidence that the initiative would not only strengthen energy journalism but also support efforts to expand access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy in Nigeria.
