ECG’s Kumasi upgrade is set to improve power stability, strengthen network resilience and support more reliable electricity supply across the region.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says its ongoing network upgrade in Greater Kumasi will be completed by 5 June 2026, with the project aimed at improving power reliability, voltage quality and overall supply stability in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement released on 29 May 2026, ECG said the works cover key sub-transmission lines from the KNUST Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation, and from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point.
The project involves replacing existing 265 sqmm conductors with 400 sqmm conductors and changing weak cables to increase power transfer capacity. ECG said the upgrade is intended to strengthen electricity supply across Greater Kumasi and reduce pressure on the network.
When completed, the project is expected to benefit communities including Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, Bekwai and surrounding areas. It will also reinforce the link between the Kumasi 1 and Kumasi 2 Bulk Supply Points, which ECG said will improve the resilience of the wider system.
The company apologised for any inconvenience caused during the works and said the temporary disruption was necessary to secure a more dependable electricity supply for the region.
