A fire at Ghana’s Akosombo substation highlights the vulnerability of critical grid infrastructure, underscoring the need for resilience and rapid response systems to safeguard national power supply.

A fire outbreak at a key transmission facility has disrupted electricity supply in parts of Ghana, with authorities working to stabilise the grid and restore normal operations.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited confirmed that the incident occurred at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region at about 2:01 p.m. on April 23, affecting transmission operations within the national grid.
According to GRIDCo, emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to contain the fire, while technical teams commenced assessment and restoration efforts to minimise the impact on electricity supply.
The company said a comprehensive evaluation is ongoing to determine the extent of damage to infrastructure and its effect on grid performance, with engineers prioritising system stabilisation.
GRIDCo assured the public that all necessary measures were being taken to manage the situation and maintain grid reliability, while urging calm as work continues.
The affected areas include Sogakope, Akatsi, Yorkutikpo, Dabala, Adutor, Torve, Tordzinu, Kpenu, Ada, parts of Keta, Adidome, and their surrounding communities.
The Akosombo Substation plays a critical role in Ghana’s power network, transmitting electricity from major generation sources, including the Volta River Authority, to distribution companies and bulk consumers nationwide.
Disruptions at the facility are expected to have ripple effects, particularly in areas reliant on power transmitted through the eastern corridor of the grid.
The company added that further updates would be provided as investigations progress, including details on the cause of the fire and timelines for full restoration.
GRIDCo reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System, which underpins electricity supply across Ghana and parts of West Africa.
