India and Malawi have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in the power and energy sector following high-level talks held on the sidelines of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026.
According to a press release issued on March 19 by the Indian Ministry of Power and seen by AEP, the meeting brought together Manohar Lal, India’s Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, and Dr Jean Mathanga, Malawi’s Minister of Energy and Mining. Both sides underscored the strength of bilateral relations and the growing importance of energy collaboration within their broader development partnership.
The ministers exchanged views on developments within their respective energy sectors, identifying opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy deployment, electricity access, power sector planning, and capacity building. The discussions reflected a shared ambition to strengthen institutional and technical engagement in support of long-term energy goals.
They also highlighted Malawi’s participation in the International Solar Alliance, an initiative launched by India and France in 2015 to accelerate global solar energy adoption, noting its relevance as a platform for deeper collaboration.
Officials described the meeting as cordial and constructive, with both countries expressing interest in sustaining engagement through structured exchanges and joint initiatives. The talks signal a continued alignment between New Delhi and Lilongwe as they seek to expand cooperation in energy infrastructure and clean power development.
