Kenya Power’s planned outages highlight ongoing efforts to modernise the grid, as utilities balance infrastructure upgrades with the disruption to homes, businesses and essential services.

Kenya Power has announced planned electricity outages across multiple counties on Thursday as part of routine maintenance aimed at improving network reliability.
The utility said the interruptions, scheduled for 30 April, will affect regions including Nairobi, Kajiado, Kisumu, Nyeri, Kiambu and parts of the Coast, with outages staggered throughout the day.
In the capital, Nairobi, areas in Lang’ata, Donholm and Savannah estates will be without power between 09:00 and 17:00. Key locations affected include Galleria Mall, the Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters, Lang’ata Barracks and several residential neighbourhoods.
Neighbouring Kajiado County will also see outages along Magadi Road in Rongai, impacting commercial hubs and health facilities, including The Nairobi Women’s Hospital.
In Kisumu County, power will be cut in parts of Chulaimbo from 08:30 to 16:30, affecting hospitals and surrounding communities, while areas near Kagumo High School in Nyeri County will face disruptions from 08:00 to 17:00.
Parts of Runda in Kiambu County are also scheduled for a day-long blackout, alongside several locations in Mombasa County, including Kongowea and Bombolulu.
Additional interruptions are expected in Tana River, Kwale and Taita Taveta counties, with some towns set to experience extended outages during the maintenance window.
Kenya Power said the works form part of ongoing system upgrades designed to enhance service delivery and improve grid performance.
Customers have been advised to plan accordingly and to treat all power lines as live during the outage period.
