Power Restored in Malawi after Nationwide Blackout as Probe Continues

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has restored power to most parts of the country after a nationwide blackout on Sunday, with the utility still investigating what caused the sudden collapse of the power system.

The outage began at about 7:11 a.m., disrupting electricity supply to homes, businesses and public institutions across Malawi. Escom said restoration started shortly afterwards, with power returning progressively across the three regions.

Supply was restored to parts of the Southern Region by 8:44 a.m., followed by the Central Region at 9:50 a.m. The Northern Region was reconnected at about 10:34 a.m., according to the utility.

Escom disclosed that major load centres had since been successfully reconnected to the national grid, although the circumstances surrounding the nationwide system shutdown remain unclear.

Escom investigates cause of outage

Escom Public Relations Officer Pilirani Phiri said the utility was conducting investigations to establish the cause of the system-wide failure.

Phiri told Capital FM that the public would be updated once the investigation establishes what triggered the outage.

The latest incident is not the first nationwide power system failure to hit Malawi. On 22 April 2025, Escom reported another system shutdown at about 12:09 p.m., leaving large parts of the country without electricity and disrupting businesses and other activities. The utility said at the time that it had not immediately established the cause of the shutdown but was working to restore supply. The incident came amid wider concerns over recurring power disruptions in Malawi, spotlighting persistent challenges with the reliability and stability of the national electricity system.

The aforementioned blackout will be closely watched amid persistent concerns over the reliability of Malawi's electricity supply. The country has experienced recurring power interruptions in recent years, placing pressure on households and businesses and raising questions about the resilience of its electricity infrastructure.

Escom's findings will provide clarity on whether the outage was linked to a technical fault, generation problems, transmission infrastructure or another system-related issue. Until the investigation is concluded, the utility has not publicly identified the cause of the nationwide blackout.
