Togo takes a major step toward cleaner air transport with plans to introduce Sustainable Aviation Fuel and improve fuel infrastructure at Lomé’s international airport.

Togo has launched a new effort to cut pollution from air travel after Togo Oil Company S.A. (T-OIL) and the Lomé-Tokoin Airport Company (SALT) signed agreements to introduce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and improve fuel facilities at the country’s main airport.
The agreements were signed on June 19 in Lomé at the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) Convention and Exhibition.
The move places Togo among the countries seeking cleaner options for the aviation sector as airlines face pressure to reduce carbon emissions.
The SAF agreement will support the introduction of aviation fuel produced from renewable resources and recovered waste materials.
SAF is considered one of the options available to help reduce emissions from aviation. According to industry estimates, the fuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly over its life cycle compared with conventional jet fuel.
The International Air Transport Association has identified SAF as a major contributor to the aviation industry’s long-term emissions reduction plans, with the sector targeting net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The project will create a framework for supplying SAF at Lomé airport and could make the facility one of the airports in West Africa preparing for wider use of alternative aviation fuels.
The second agreement covers the construction of a 1,500-cubic-metre Jet A1 fuel storage tank at Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport.
The new facility will increase fuel storage capacity at the airport and provide additional support for aircraft operations.
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Robert Koffi Messan Eklo said the projects form part of government efforts to strengthen Lomé’s position as an aviation hub in the region.
The agreements bring together fuel supply development and airport infrastructure improvements as Togo works to expand its aviation capacity and introduce cleaner energy options for air transport.
