Vandalism of six towers on the Apir–Lafia 330kV corridor has left key transmission lines down, risking wider power instability and underscoring threats to national grid security.

Six transmission towers on the Apir–Lafia 330kV transmission corridor were vandalised in the early hours of 30 May, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed, in what engineers say is a setback to efforts to stabilise supply to parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Plateau State.
TCN said towers T125 to T130 on both Apir–Lafia 330kV Lines I and II collapsed at about 1:15 a.m. during a heavy downpour. A trial reclosure of Line II at 2:08 a.m. following the initial trip failed, after which technicians conducted a physical trace of the line and discovered damage consistent with deliberate vandalism.
“Damage to critical components of towers T125 to T130 confirmed acts of vandalism on the affected sections of the transmission corridor,” the company stated, adding that both lines will remain out of service pending reconstruction.
TCN engineers have been deployed to the site to assess the extent of the damage and determine the materials and labour required to restore the corridor, the utility said.
To reduce disruption, the utility said Lafia 330kV Transmission Station is being temporarily supplied through the Lafia–Jos line. The arrangement is intended to minimise the impact on customers served by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC).
TCN urged host communities and members of the public to report suspicious activity around transmission installations to security agencies or the nearest TCN office, warning that collective vigilance is necessary to protect national grid assets.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, Transmission Company of Nigeria, issued the statement on 3 June 2026.
