Coega Steels launches a major solar project in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, advancing cleaner energy use in heavy industry and supporting green steel production.

Coega Steels has commissioned a 7.08 MWp solar power plant in Gqeberha, the largest single commercial solar installation in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.
The project, developed in partnership with Emergent Energy, combines rooftop and ground-mounted systems, with a total of 11,484 solar panels installed across the site. The installation was completed in phases, beginning with 785 kWp, followed by 3,906 kWp on rooftops and 3,174 kWp on ground-mounted structures.
“This project demonstrates how renewable energy can be integrated into large-scale industrial operations,” a company representative said, highlighting its role in strengthening energy reliability.
The solar plant will supply power to the region’s first steel melting facility, reducing reliance on coal-based electricity from the national grid. The shift supports Coega Steels’ efforts to cut emissions and produce lower-carbon steel in response to growing global demand for greener materials.
The development also supports local employment, with the steel plant sustaining around 450 jobs. Stable energy supply and reduced operating costs are expected to strengthen business continuity and support future expansion.
The project not only benefits the environment but also supports the local economy. The steel plant currently provides around 450 jobs, and the use of solar energy helps ensure the long-term stability of these positions. Lower energy costs and a more stable power supply reduce business risks and create opportunities for future growth. This makes the project important for both workers and the wider community. The initiative is said to supportsSouth Africa’s industrial development and climate action goals.
