Envusa Energy begins operations at its 240MW Mooi Plaats solar project in South Africa, supplying clean power to major mining companies and advancing the country’s energy transition.

Envusa Energy, a joint venture between Anglo American and EDF Power Solutions, has commenced commercial operations at its 240MW Mooi Plaats Solar PV Project in South Africa’s Northern Cape, marking a significant step in the country’s transition toward cleaner energy.
The project will supply electricity to major mining operations, including Valterra Platinum, De Beers, and Kumba Iron Ore, while feeding renewable power into the national grid. It is the first in a pipeline of projects under the Envusa portfolio, which aims to aggregate energy from multiple sites and distribute it based on demand.
Nolitha Fakude, chair of Envusa Energy’s board and Anglo American South Africa, described the development as a landmark in the company’s decarbonisation efforts. “Mooi Plaats is a major milestone in Envusa Energy’s decarbonisation journey. It is the first of three projects, with two additional 140MW plants expected later this year. This project delivers low-carbon power, strengthens national energy security, and creates new socio-economic opportunities,” she said.
The facility operates through long-term offtake agreements, providing stable electricity supply and potential cost savings for its mining clients. It is also integrated into a portfolio wheeling system developed in partnership with Eskom, allowing energy generated across multiple locations to be allocated efficiently.
Tristan de Drouas, CEO of EDF Power Solutions South Africa, said the project reflects the strength of the partnership behind it. “Mooi Plaats demonstrates the progress of our partnership with Anglo American, deploying world-class renewable energy projects that support South Africa’s clean energy transition,” he said.
