Ghana moves to implement round-the-clock petroleum operations to improve fuel distribution, create jobs and strengthen the downstream sector.

Ghana is moving to introduce 24-hour operations in its downstream petroleum sector, with authorities pointing to job creation and improved fuel distribution as key outcomes of the initiative.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) formalised the plan through a memorandum of understanding with the 24-Hour Economy Authority, signed on Tuesday, 31 March. The agreement sets the stage for continuous operations across fuel depots, refineries and retail outlets.
Chief Executive of the NPA, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, said the shift addresses longstanding inefficiencies linked to limited operating hours. “The downstream petroleum sector remains a cornerstone of our economy. It fuels transportation, powers industries and supports commerce,” he said.
He noted that restricted working hours have constrained supply chains and reduced economic opportunities. “Adopting round-the-clock operations will improve availability, strengthen distribution efficiency and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs,” Tameklo added.
The initiative will extend operations across bulk storage facilities, distribution networks and filling stations, ensuring petroleum products remain accessible nationwide. Authorities say the move will also support government revenue and wider economic activity.
Tameklo stressed that safety will remain a priority as operations expand, with coordination expected between industry players, security agencies and emergency services to protect infrastructure and personnel.
Stakeholders across the sector, including oil marketing companies, depot operators and transporters, are expected to support implementation through investment and operational readiness.
The agreement marks a coordinated push to strengthen Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry and improve its resilience through continuous operations.
