Nigeria: LASERC Inspects 40MW Power Plant on Victoria Island

Regulators inspect 40-megawatt facility set to supply electricity to Lagos businesses from December 2026.

The Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) inspected Elektron Energy's 40-megawatt Victoria Island Power Plant to monitor construction progress before its December 2026 commercial launch.

LASERC Chief Executive Officer, Temitope George, led regulatory officials Adekunle Olopade and Adetunji Adesanya to the project site to verify engineering readiness.

Elektron Energy operates the Victoria Island Power (VIPL) project in partnership with Eko Power to provide direct electricity to commercial operators in the district.

The regulatory inspection confirms operational checks following LASERC's recent issuance of an electricity generation licence to Elektron Energy.

Regulators review construction ahead of December launch

Engineers showed state regulators around the facility to demonstrate progress on the 40MW installation.

Elektron Energy General Manager of Operations, Nicholas Abolo-Tedi, and Director of Engineering, Oladipo Ogunniyi, received the government delegation.

Mika Gummerus, Site Manager for Finnish engineering firm Wärtsilä, joined them to present construction reports. Wärtsilä handles the engineering, procurement, and construction contracts for the energy project.

Abolo-Tedi stated that the plant will solve historic power deficiencies affecting local business operations.

"We are not just building a power plant — we are building trust with the regulator and the community we intend to serve," he said.

"Every milestone we hit here is a milestone toward putting an end to the power gaps that have held back businesses on Victoria Island for years."

George stated that regulators want private capital investments to result in clear service upgrades for power users across Lagos State.

"LASERC's role is to ensure that as Lagos opens its power sector to private investment, that investment translates into real, measurable improvements for residents and businesses," he said.

Alternative energy for commercial hubs

The VIPL project supplies targeted electricity to banks, hotels, and corporate headquarters located across Victoria Island.

Commercial properties on the island historically depended on diesel generators to support unstable public power grid connections.

The new 40MW facility provides a dedicated power source that cuts backup generator reliance and improves operational planning for firms.

Elektron Energy reported that construction timelines remain on schedule. The company will conduct further regulatory reviews with LASERC as December 2026 approaches.
