South Africa has secured fuel consignments through early April, but the government warns that surging global crude prices could drive domestic fuel costs higher in the coming months.

South Africa confirmed on Friday that its immediate fuel supply is secure following the confirmation of fuel consignments for March and early April, even as rising global crude oil prices threaten to push domestic costs higher.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said the deliveries were “secured prior to the recent escalation in global tensions,” adding that “these deliveries have commenced and are expected to adequately sustain national supply over the coming weeks.”
Global oil markets have been unsettled by ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted supply chains and heightened uncertainty along critical shipping routes. According to the department, these developments have already exerted upward pressure on international prices, exposing South Africa and other nations to external shocks.
The government cautioned that sustained increases in global oil prices, compounded by exchange rate fluctuations, are likely to feed through into higher domestic fuel costs. It stressed the importance of transparency in pricing, particularly for unregulated products such as jet fuel, and urged industry stakeholders to ensure compliance with competition and consumer protection laws.
While assuring South Africans of short-term supply stability, authorities are pursuing long-term strategies to strengthen energy security. These measures include diversifying import sources, expanding strategic storage capacity, and accelerating infrastructure investments.
With global markets remaining volatile, the department’s proactive steps aim to mitigate the impact on households and businesses, ensuring the country remains resilient in the face of external price shocks.
