The Songo Songo field continues to supply natural gas as the government negotiates licence extension talks with Pan African Energy Tanzania.

Tanzania has confirmed that 12 natural gas wells have been drilled at the Songo Songo gas block, as production continues ahead of the expiry of the current development licence in 2026.
Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba said the wells include nine drilled by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and three by Pan African Energy Tanzania.
She made the remarks in Dodoma during a parliamentary session in response to questions from Kilwa South MP Hasnain Gulamabbas Dewji.
Makamba said the Songo Songo block is currently producing an average of 84.7 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, depending on prevailing demand conditions. She added that the government is in discussions with Pan African Energy Tanzania on extending the existing production licence, which is due to expire in October 2026.
The negotiations are aimed at ensuring continued production and stable gas supply from the long-running offshore and onshore development.
The Songo Songo gas field is located on and offshore Songo Songo Island, approximately 15 kilometres from the Tanzanian mainland and around 200 kilometres south of Dar es Salaam. It was Tanzania’s first natural gas development and remains one of the country’s most important energy assets, currently accounting for approximately 54% of the country’s daily gas output.
The field holds total proved and probable reserves of 293 billion cubic feet, with a productive capacity of approximately 165 million standard cubic feet per day.
