Several Kampala neighbourhoods will experience temporary daytime electricity interruptions as Uganda upgrades transmission infrastructure aimed at improving grid stability and long-term power reliability.

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced scheduled daytime power outages in several parts of Kampala as authorities commence upgrade works on the Lugogo-Kampala North 132kV transmission line.
According to a public notice issued by the utility company, the planned shutdowns will take place between May 14 and June 2, 2026, affecting communities served by the Lugogo bypass transmission corridor.
UEDCL said the temporary outages are necessary to allow the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) carry out critical infrastructure upgrades under the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project.
“These works are part of the ongoing Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project that is expected to significantly improve power supply reliability in this area,” the company stated.
The outages are scheduled to occur between 7am and 6pm on designated days, depending on the affected locations.
Areas expected to experience the temporary shutdowns include sections of Kamwokya, Bukoto, Kisementi, Naguru, Lugogo, Kyambogo, Banda, Bweyogerere, Naalya and the Namamve Industrial Park, particularly communities situated along the Lugogo bypass.
Speaking on the development, Muhammad Lubogo of UETCL said the maintenance exercise forms part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure within the Kampala metropolitan area.
“These scheduled daytime power interruptions over the next three weeks will facilitate critical upgrade and maintenance works under the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project,” he explained.
Lubogo added that the project is expected to improve electricity reliability, reduce the frequency of outages, strengthen voltage stability and support rising power demand linked to urban expansion and industrial growth.
“UETCL regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience as these strategic improvements are undertaken,” he said.
UEDCL advised residents and businesses in affected areas to make adequate arrangements during the maintenance period, assuring customers that electricity supply would be restored immediately after completion of the scheduled works.
