Algeria’s first Jet A1 fuel shipments to Niger mark a broader expansion of energy ties between the neighbours, spanning petroleum products, power generation and upstream exploration

Algeria has commenced exporting Jet A1 aviation fuel to Niger from its Adrar refinery, marking another step in the expansion of energy cooperation between the two countries.
State-owned Sonatrach said on Saturday that the first shipments were delivered under a sale and purchase agreement signed with Niger’s national oil company, SONIDEP.
The development gives Niger access to refined aviation fuel from a nearby North African producer while creating an additional outlet for Algeria’s refining capacity.
Sonatrach noted that the shipments formed part of its efforts to strengthen direct cooperation with African oil and gas companies.
The fuel shipments come as Algeria and Niger deepen cooperation across several parts of the energy sector.
Sonatrach has also begun drilling an exploration well in Niger, with the start of operations formally marked on Thursday at a ceremony attended by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine.
The cooperation extends beyond hydrocarbons. In June, Algeria delivered a 40 MW power plant to Niger to supply electricity to Niamey and surrounding areas.
Taken together, the refinery exports, upstream exploration and power project point to a broader energy relationship rather than a one-off fuel transaction. Algeria is expanding its role as an energy supplier and investor in Niger, while Niger gains access to refined products, electricity infrastructure and technical cooperation as it develops its own energy sector.
