A 1 gigawatt wind project in Egypt is set to produce electricity for more than 1.2 million homes after Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities signed a power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company.
The Ras Shokeir project, backed by UAE-based Masdar, will be built on Egypt’s western Gulf of Suez coast, using one of the country’s strongest wind areas to generate clean electricity.
The project stands out for the amount of electricity it is expected to produce and the scale of its environmental benefit. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to prevent more than 1.36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
Infinity Power, a joint venture between Egypt’s Infinity and Masdar of the United Arab Emirates, is developing the project with Cairo-based Hassan Allam Utilities.
The companies signed the power purchase agreement with EETC for the Ras Shokeir wind project. A power purchase agreement sets out the arrangement for selling electricity from a power project to a buyer.
The wind farm will occupy 143 square kilometres in Ras Shokeir, within the Gulf of Suez region. The area is one of Egypt’s strongest wind corridors, making it suitable for large-scale wind electricity generation.
The project is also expected to supply enough clean electricity for more than 1.2 million homes after it starts operating. At the same time, it is expected to avoid more than 1.36 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.
Mohamed Ismail Mansour, chairman of Infinity Power, said the Ras Shokeir project is part of the company’s plan to have 10GW of operational renewable energy capacity by 2032.
The project therefore sits within a larger renewable energy programme being pursued by Infinity Power in Egypt. The company has already signed another power purchase agreement for a 200 megawatt wind farm.
That agreement was signed with EETC in August 2024.
Masdar and Infinity Power have also secured government backing for other renewable energy projects in Egypt. In July 2025, the Egyptian cabinet granted Masdar a “golden licence” for its new wind power project in the country.
In September 2024, Masdar received approval from the Egyptian government to invest more than $900 million in solar power plants.
Those solar projects will have a combined capacity of 1GW and will be located mainly in Upper Egypt.
Egypt’s renewable energy plans are also tied to changes in its natural gas production. The country plans to speed up solar, wind and green hydrogen projects as natural gas production declines.
Egypt aims to increase renewable power generation to 42 per cent by 2035.
The Ras Shokeir project gives the country another large wind facility as it works towards that renewable electricity goal. Its projected output would serve a large number of homes, with the annual emissions reduction also giving the project a significant environmental benefit.
However, details on the cost and completion date are not yet available. No financial details or timeline for completing the Ras Shokeir wind farm were disclosed when the power purchase agreement was signed.
