Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission grants MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited a 20-year licence., a landmark move under Nigeria's Electricity Act 2023 and Enugu State Electricity Law 2023.

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has issued a 20-year distribution licence to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MPEDL), officially authorising the company to distribute electricity across Enugu State.
Speaking during the licence issuance, EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo described the event as historic. He said MainPower, a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), met all regulatory requirements and is now the first distribution company to operate under the sub-national electricity market framework outlined in the Electricity Act 2023 and the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023.
“MainPower is officially the first subgroup to be issued its operating licence to provide electricity services over the next 20 years in Enugu State,” Okonkwo said. He attributed the achievement to the Enugu State Electricity Policy and the state’s electricity law enacted in 2023.
MainPower General Manager Ernest Mupwaya welcomed the licence, highlighting the company’s responsibility to provide efficient service as the primary point of customer interaction in the electricity sector. “We have developed a robust transformation plan to improve our distribution operations. With stakeholder support, customers will begin to see continuous improvements in service delivery,” he said.
The 20-year licence marks the start of a long-term journey for MainPower, ensuring that Enugu State residents have access to reliable electricity services under a regulated, commercially-driven framework.
The move comes as EERC continues to exercise full regulatory oversight of the Enugu electricity market, aiming to develop an efficient electricity system and achieve universal access to power.
