Ghana Grid Outage Triggers Nationwide Power Restoration Effort

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has begun restoring electricity across the country after a disturbance on the national transmission network caused several generating plants to trip simultaneously, triggering a widespread blackout early Wednesday.

The incident occurred at about 3:11 a.m. on 29 July 2026, disrupting electricity supply to several parts of Ghana and prompting GRIDCo to activate its system restoration procedures in coordination with other power sector operators.

GRIDCo investigates cause of outage

GRIDCo said its engineers and system operators were working continuously to restore electricity while maintaining the safety and stability of the national power system.

The company explained that the disturbance occurred on the National Interconnected Transmission System, which links power generation facilities with distribution networks and enables electricity to be transmitted across the country.

According to GRIDCo, the event caused some generating plants to shut down at the same time, resulting in the interruption of electricity supply.

The company has also launched a comprehensive technical investigation to establish the precise cause of the disturbance and determine what triggered the simultaneous tripping of the affected generating plants.

GRIDCo apologised to consumers for the disruption and assured that it would continue providing updates as restoration work progresses.

The outage emphasises the importance of maintaining the stability and resilience of Ghana's electricity transmission system as the country works to meet rising power demand and maintain reliable electricity supply.

The restoration effort will require coordination between GRIDCo, generating companies and distribution utilities to progressively bring the system back to normal operation without compromising grid stability.

The aforestated incident is not the first time a disturbance on Ghana's transmission network has caused widespread electricity interruptions.

On 3 April 2025, a fault on the Tafo–Nkawkaw transmission line triggered a similar chain of events, with other transmission lines subsequently tripping while engineers worked to restore the affected line.

The disruption caused some power plants to shut down and affected electricity supply in parts of Accra, Kumasi and areas north of Kumasi. GRIDCo's System Control Centre then worked to stabilise the network and restore supply, with power fully restored by 10:57 p.m. that day.
