A new hybrid renewable energy project in Mpumalanga will combine large-scale solar generation with battery storage, illustratring South Africa’s growing shift toward flexible clean power solutions that can improve grid reliability and meet rising corporate demand for lower-carbon electricity.

A consortium of South African energy and investment companies plans to develop a 184MW solar power park paired with 300MWh of battery storage in Mpumalanga, targeting businesses seeking reliable renewable electricity under long-term power purchase agreements.
SolarAfrica, backed by French sustainable investment manager Mirova, is partnering with MPower, the energy platform of property investor Moolman Group, and investment firm Fledge Capital to develop the Highveld Hybrid Energy Park near eMalahleni.
The project combines solar generation with battery storage, allowing electricity produced during periods of strong sunlight to be stored and supplied during evening demand. Commercial operations are scheduled for 2029.
South African businesses continue to seek alternatives to conventional grid supply as electricity costs remain high and companies look for more dependable power.
SolarAfrica CEO David McDonald said the approach gives customers more control over when they draw on cheaper, greener power instead of standard grid electricity.
The Highveld Hybrid Energy Park will supply wheeled renewable electricity to commercial customers from 2029. The developers have not disclosed the buyers, although South African media reports say the project may supply properties within Moolman Group's retail portfolio.
Highveld joins projects by CrossBoundary Energy and Daystar Power that supply renewable electricity directly to commercial and industrial customers under long-term power purchase agreements.
CrossBoundary Energy operates solar and battery projects for Nigerian Breweries in Nigeria and Kenya's Devki Group. Daystar Power supplies Nestlé facilities in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal under comparable agreements.
MPower CEO JZ Moolman said the project answers growing demand from South African businesses for long-term price certainty, stronger energy security, and lower-carbon power through wheeled renewable electricity.
Battery storage features in all three projects. Developers are pairing batteries with solar generation because commercial customers require electricity after sunset as well as during daylight hours. The combination allows solar power produced during the day to be supplied during evening demand, reducing reliance on grid electricity and diesel generation.
South Africa's electricity wheeling framework gives projects such as Highveld access to customers connected to the national grid without building dedicated transmission lines, opening the market to companies willing to sign long-term power purchase agreements with independent power producers.
Highveld Hybrid Energy is the latest addition to SolarAfrica's utility-scale pipeline, which now runs to 14 projects across South Africa alongside its existing SunCentral solar farm.
McDonald said the company is building toward the generation capacity the market will need over the coming years, while giving businesses more flexibility in how they procure and use electricity.
