Algeria, Benin Explore New Energy Projects, Equipment Trade Partnership

Algeria and Benin are seeking to deepen cooperation in electricity, energy equipment manufacturing and technical training as both countries explore new projects aimed at strengthening power infrastructure and expanding trade in energy technologies across West Africa.

The plans were discussed during a videoconference on Wednesday between Algeria's Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, and Benin's Minister of Energy, Water and Mines, Edouard Dahome, according to a statement from Algeria's Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies.

The meeting reviewed progress under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2024 between Algeria's Sonelgaz Group and the Communauté Électrique du Bénin (CEB), which provides a framework for cooperation in electricity, professional training, skills development and the transfer of technical expertise.

Expanding cooperation and regional ambitions

Adjal reaffirmed Algeria's readiness to support Benin's electricity sector through technical assistance, specialised training and knowledge sharing.

He also highlighted Sonelgaz's capacity to manufacture electrical equipment, saying Algeria is prepared to explore supplying the Beninese market with locally produced transformers, cables and other power equipment.

The ministers also discussed promoting Algerian-made electrical equipment in other West African countries, a move that could expand regional markets for Algeria's energy manufacturing sector.

The talks suggest both governments are looking beyond technical cooperation towards commercially focused partnerships that combine infrastructure development with trade and industrial collaboration.

Closer cooperation would give Benin access to additional technical expertise and equipment for its electricity network. It would also support Algeria's ambition to expand the footprint of its energy manufacturers across Africa.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the 2024 agreement and agreed to identify priority projects that could move the partnership from framework agreements to practical collaboration.
