NAWEC Rejects Claims of Electricity Tariff Increase in The Gambia

The Gambia’s National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media that electricity tariffs, commonly known as “Cash Power” rates, have been increased.

The utility said no electricity tariff increase has been implemented, urging customers to disregard claims suggesting otherwise.

NAWEC explained that any future adjustment to electricity tariffs would have to go through the required regulatory approval process before taking effect. Any approved change would also be formally announced through the company’s official communication channels.

The clarification comes as electricity costs remain a sensitive issue for households and businesses, particularly amid pressure from rising fuel and energy costs.

Government subsidies continue to cushion electricity consumers

NAWEC added that electricity tariffs in The Gambia continue to benefit from government subsidies aimed at keeping power services affordable.

The subsidies are intended to reduce the impact of rising global fuel prices on consumers while helping households and businesses maintain access to electricity at manageable costs.

“These subsidies are intended to cushion consumers from the effects of rising global fuel prices and help maintain affordable electricity services for households and businesses across the country,” NAWEC said.

The company urged customers to rely on verified information from its official platforms and avoid sharing unconfirmed claims that could create unnecessary concern.

NAWEC assured that it would continue to communicate directly with the public on any developments affecting electricity tariffs, operations and service delivery.
