Construction has begun on Botswana's 100MW Tati Solar Project, a more than BWP1 billion investment expected to create hundreds of jobs and supply renewable electricity to the Southern African power market.

Shumba Energy Limited has commenced construction of the 100MW Tati Solar Project in Botswana following the issuance of a full notice to proceed to the appointed contractor, marking a major milestone for one of the country's largest renewable energy developments.
The solar facility is being developed near Francistown in Botswana's North-East District and is expected to begin commercial operations in 2027.
Project to supply regional power market
The solar farm will occupy about 160 hectares within a special economic zone and will supply electricity to the regional Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), supporting efforts to strengthen power availability across Southern Africa.
Shumba Energy said the project represents an investment of more than BWP1 billion and forms part of broader efforts to expand renewable energy generation in Botswana.
Investment and ownership structure
The company said the project is expected to create about 600 jobs during the construction phase, with additional permanent positions anticipated once operations commence. Local employment and skills development have been identified as key priorities for the project.
Tati Solar (Pty) Limited, the project company, is majority owned by Etavi Renewables, which holds a 51 per cent stake, while a co-sponsor and equity partner owns the remaining 49 per cent. Shumba Energy holds a 75 per cent interest in Etavi Renewables through its subsidiary, Asase Investments.
Construction follows the completion of financing arrangements for the project. Rand Merchant Bank, a subsidiary of FirstRand, acted as lead arranger for a financing package valued at approximately $100 million.
