Egypt's renewable energy expansion gained momentum after Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy secured a $560 million contract for a 1,000 MW solar project with battery storage, reinforcing the country's drive to become a regional clean energy hub

Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL) has secured a contract valued at about $560 million to develop a 1,000-megawatt solar power project with battery storage in Egypt, marking another milestone in the country's efforts to expand utility-scale renewable energy generation.
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, awarded in partnership with Hassan Allam Construction, covers the delivery of a solar photovoltaic plant integrated with a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) in Minya Governorate.
Upon completion, the project will rank among Egypt's largest utility-scale renewable energy developments, strengthening the country's electricity system with additional clean energy and storage capacity.
The joint venture will undertake the installation of photovoltaic generation facilities, battery storage infrastructure, transmission facilities, grid interconnection works and other supporting systems required to deliver the project.
Project reinforces Egypt's renewable energy ambitions
The award comes as Egypt accelerates investments in large-scale renewable energy projects to diversify its electricity mix, improve energy security and position itself as a regional clean energy hub serving both domestic and export markets.
By combining solar generation with battery storage, the project is designed to improve grid reliability by enabling electricity generated during daylight hours to be stored and supplied when demand is high or solar output declines.
Commenting on the award, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Group's Global Chief Executive Officer, Chandra Kishore Thakur, said the company remained committed to delivering the project within schedule while maintaining high standards of safety, quality and operational performance.
He noted that the latest contract represents the company's third gigawatt-scale solar project within nine months, reflecting growing customer confidence and the increasing scale of utility-scale photovoltaic developments worldwide.
The Egypt contract builds on Sterling and Wilson's expanding renewable energy portfolio. In April, the company secured a ₹3,550 crore engineering, procurement and construction contract from Coal India for an 875-megawatt grid-connected solar photovoltaic project in Rajasthan, further strengthening its presence in the global clean energy market.
