GRIDCo has restored power after completing preliminary repairs on the Tema-Achimota line, but a damaged transmission tower will be replaced on August 23, with further outages possible

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has restored electricity supply to affected customers after completing the first phase of repair works on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema-Achimota transmission line.
The preliminary works were carried out on Sunday, August 16, as part of efforts to stabilise the damaged section of the transmission network following a welding explosion in July that compromised one of the line’s towers.
GRIDCo said the final phase of the repair will involve replacing the damaged tower on Sunday, August 23, meaning customers in parts of the affected area could experience further power interruptions.
The company added that it would work with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to notify affected communities ahead of the scheduled work.
Although power has been restored, GRIDCo said the repair process is not yet complete.
The damaged tower remains to be replaced, making the August 23 exercise the critical final stage in restoring the structural integrity of the transmission line.
GRIDCo explained that the replacement is necessary to ensure the line's continued reliability and resilience and urged customers and communities to cooperate with engineers during the exercise.
The company stated that it would provide advance information on any areas likely to experience supply interruptions as the work progresses.
The repairs draws attention to the importance of maintaining critical transmission infrastructure, particularly where damage to a single tower can require supply restrictions while engineers secure the network.
GRIDCo reaffirmed its commitment to completing the replacement and returning the transmission line to a safe and reliable condition.
