Uganda’s West Nile is set to gain its first utility-scale grid-connected solar plant as AMEA Power advances the 24-MWp Ituka project towards commercial operation.

AMEA Power has energised the substation at its 24-MWp Ituka solar project in Uganda’s West Nile region, bringing the plant closer to supplying electricity to the national grid.
The Dubai-based renewable energy developer said the 25 MVA, 132/33kV substation has been energised, allowing the solar farm to begin feeding early generation into the grid as work progresses towards commercial operation.
The development gives West Nile a new role in Uganda’s growing utility-scale solar market. Ituka will become the region’s first and largest grid-connected solar facility when fully operational.
The project is being built on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, where construction began after the ground-breaking ceremony in August 2024. Investment in the project was estimated at $19 million at the time.
The plant will add 24 MWp of solar capacity to Uganda’s electricity system, extending large-scale renewable generation into West Nile and adding another source of power to the national grid.
Ituka will be AMEA Power’s first operational asset in Uganda, marking the company’s entry into the country’s utility-scale solar market. Energising the substation is therefore, an important development both for the company’s entry into the Ugandan market and for the region’s expansion of grid-connected solar generation.
