TCN Schedules Maintenance, Announces Six-Hour Power Outage

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says electricity supply will be temporarily interrupted in several communities across the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, 18 July, to allow for scheduled maintenance at the Kubwa 132/33kV Transmission Substation.

The maintenance exercise will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and involves annual preventive servicing of one of the substation's 100MVA 132/33kV power transformers (TR2) and its associated switchgear.

During the exercise, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) will be unable to receive electricity from the transmission substation for distribution to customers in the affected areas.

Communities expected to experience the temporary outage include Dutse Bupma, Ushafa, Jigo, Peyi, Pambara, Kogo, Veritas University, Bwari Dutse, Army Estate, Berger Camp, FHA, FCDA, Karatana Village, Aso Garden, Papas Ground and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The company apologised for the inconvenience the planned outage will cause and appealed to affected customers for understanding while the maintenance work is completed.

Planned maintenance is a routine exercise

The aforementioned maintenance follows a series of similar planned outages announced by the Transmission Company of Nigeria in recent years.

In 2024 and 2025, TCN temporarily shut down transmission facilities in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, Benin, Enugu and other parts of the country to service transformers, transmission lines and switchgear. In June 2025, for instance, the company announced scheduled maintenance at the Apo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Abuja, resulting in temporary power interruptions to several districts.

Similar exercises have also been carried out at substations serving parts of Lagos and Kano as TCN continues efforts to improve the reliability of the national grid through routine inspection and replacement of ageing equipment.
